OnePlus 4: release date, news and rumors

Update: New rumors suggest that before the OnePlus 4 we might get a OnePlus 3S or OnePlus 3 Plus. While the co-founder of OnePlus, Carl Pei, has been asking fans whether they like the 3.5mm headphone jack...
OnePlus has managed to consistently stand out from the crowd by offering high-end hardware at a mid-range price.
But even to say that undersells its achievements. The company often out-specs rivals with its 'Never Settle' mantra and clearly puts time and thought into its phones, yet still manages to sell them for less.
All of that is true of the OnePlus 3, which has a massive 6GB of RAM, along with a premium build and high-end specs throughout, all for just $399, £329 (around AU$450).
It's a remarkable phone then, but it's not perfect and we've come up with a wish list of things that we want to see for the inevitable OnePlus 4.
You'll also find all the latest news and rumors about the phone on this page. There's not much to go on yet, but for now we've speculated about what we might see and when we're likely to get it.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? The next affordable flagship from OnePlus
  • When is it out? Mid 2017
  • What will it cost? Probably around £330, $400, AU$450
  • OnePlus 4 release date

The OnePlus One launched in April 2014, the OnePlus 2 in July 2015 and the OnePlus 3 in June 2016.
It's more than likely then, that the fourth generation OnePlus flagship with land in mid-2017, to keep the Chinese firm on the annual rotation of new handsets which is commonplace in the mobile industry.
If we had to nail down a more exact OnePlus 4 release date we'd be tempted to say June 2017, but if OnePlus can get it out a couple of months earlier it could land around the same time as the Samsung Galaxy S8HTC 11 and LG G6 - which could really get the wind up the competition.
There are also rumors of a OnePlus 3S or OnePlus 3 Plus, which could look like the OnePlus 3 but with a new screen and processor, and that may well launch in early 2017 - in which case we probably won't see the actual OnePlus 4 before June.

    OnePlus 4 news and rumors

What can we expect from the OnePlus 4? That's anyone's guess right now, but fortunately we like to guess and by looking at trends and upcoming technologies we can round down the likely specs and features of the phone.
So that's exactly what we've done, split up into sections below, so you can find out all about the likely screen, design or whatever else you might be curious about.
  • OnePlus 4 screen

The OnePlus 3 has a 5.5-inch 1080 x 1920 display, just like the OnePlus 2 and theOnePlus One. Given how staunchly the company has stuck to that size and resolution combination it's tempting to think it will do the same with the OnePlus 4, and that's certainly possible, but we reckon it will push the resolution up to 1440 x 2560.
The resolution of the screen on the OnePlus 3 is one of its few faults and one of the only areas you can really point to and say that's where the company cut corners.
To make an impact next year it's likely to push the resolution up, especially since by then just about every flagship is likely to have a QHD or higher resolution screen.
But why do we need to push resolution above 1080p on such a small screen? Two letters: VR. Virtual Reality is big in 2016, even OnePlus has got in on the act launching the OnePlus 3 in VR (and the OnePlus 2 in 2015), but for the best experiences you need a high resolution display.
A 2K screen would improve the VR experience on the OnePlus 4, as well as giving a boost to movies and gaming
The size however probably will stay the same. OnePlus only makes one phone a year in general (after it axed its OnePlus X series) and while there's no such thing as one size fits all the company is going to want to get close.
Big phones are growing in popularity and it's done well with the 5.5-inch size point, so we can't see the OnePlus 4 getting any smaller, but any bigger pushes it into phablet territory, which is a relatively niche market.
We may see a move from AMOLED back to LCD though, as OnePlus is reportedlystruggling to source enough AMOLED panels to keep up with OnePlus 3 demand.

OnePlus 4 design

While it's tough to pinpoint how OnePlus has kept the cost down in the final design of its handsets it presumably aims to keep spending to a minimum during the development of the phone, which means a whole new design every year isn't likely to be on the cards.
The company completely changed the design for the OnePlus 3, giving it a truly premium metal build, so we expect to see something similar for the OnePlus 4. It won't be identical – look out for something slimmer and more refined, but it will likely have a similar overall look.
We're hoping for further bezel slimming - allowing the OnePlus 4 to sport a more compact frame even though it houses a 5.5-inch display. The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge also boasts a 5.5-inch screen, but it's narrower and shorter than the OnePlus 3, which means the OnePlus 4 should be able to slim down too.
We won't mind if OnePlus makes its fourth gen phone slightly thicker, allowing it to reduce bezel size while making a bit more room for a bigger battery. And space for a microSD slot? We can but dream.

OnePlus 4 camera

A lot of work was put into the camera on the OnePlus 3. Both rear and front sensors have a high megapixel count (16MP and 8MP respectively), there's optical image stabilization and plenty of other features.
But the end result is a snapper which still isn't quite up to the standards of the best around, so expect the camera on the OnePlus 4 to be further tuned and improved. That's not to say it's a bad offering, it's just the bar has been raised so high it's difficult - on a budget - to match it.
The megapixel count on the rear snapper may change, but if so it will probably be dropped in line with the current trend of 12MP snappers from the likes of Samsung, Apple and Huawei.
We doubt the front-facing one will get a new megapixel count though, as 8MP is higher than most rivals, while still low enough to take a good shot.
It's also possible that OnePlus will mix things up further by adding a dual-lens camera, especially as this looks to be the next trend, but then the company doesn't always follow trends, so don't count on it.

OnePlus 4 battery

Battery life is one area which OnePlus will hopefully be focusing on for next year's handset. The OnePlus 3 charges up fast, but its juice pack has shrunk to 3000mAh, a reduction in size from its predecessors.
Performance of the battery suffers, and the OnePlus 3 can just about see out a full day with moderate usage - so we're hoping the OnePlus 4 gets a boost in this department.
The Dash Charge tech OnePlus has employed in the 3 is impressive, and we fully expect to see it return in the OnePlus 4. It could be even faster too, as sister company Oppo unveiled an even speedier charging tech at MWC 2016.

OnePlus 4 OS and power

OnePlus flagships are always among the most powerful around, at least on paper, and we don't expect that will change with the OnePlus 4.
So it's likely to have whatever the processor of the moment is, which by then will probably be the Snapdragon 830. That chip, while not official yet, is rumored to support 8GB of RAM, so don't be surprised if the OnePlus 4 comes with that much, given that the OnePlus 3 already has 6GB.
Prior to that though we might get a OnePlus 3S or OnePlus 3 Plus with a Snapdragon 821 processor.
The OnePlus 4 will almost certainly run Android (likely Android Nougat) overlaid with OnePlus' own Oxygen OS.

OnePlus 4 other features

The OnePlus 3 has a fingerprint scanner, so expect that to return. It's possible that OnePlus will add other features for its next phone, perhaps an iris scanner for example, since Samsung is possibly about to start using them.
But on the other hand the company will likely be focused on making the best phone it can while keeping costs down, so if it doesn't think a feature is worthwhile or likely to be used by many then it probably won't include it. An example of that is the lack of NFC on the OnePlus 2.
The other question is whether the OnePlus 4 will come with a 3.5mm headphone jack. Motorola and Apple have dropped the aging audio technology from recent phone releases - including the Moto Z Force and iPhone 7 - and it seems Carl Pei, co-founder of OnePlus, is interested in whether the community thinks the headphone jack is necessary.

London is next in line for Google-backed gigabit Wi-Fi

After New York, Intersection is bringing its gigabit Wi-Fi street furniture to London

London is next in line to receive the Link high-speed Wi-Fi service that briefly brought high-speed porn to the streets of New York.
Intersection, the company behind LinkNYC, is partnering with British telecommunications operator BT and outdoor advertising company Primesight to deliver the service in London. Intersection is partly funded by Sidewalk Labs, a subsidiary of Google's parent Alphabet.
Next year, BT will replace 100 of its phone booths with the LinkUK pillars, delivering gigabit Wi-Fi, free phone calls, and local information services on built-in Android tablets. The companies aim to install up to 750 of the hotspots across the UK in the coming years.
The pillars will also offer free power, via USB charging sockets. There's no risk of them slurping your phone's contents, or infecting them via the BadUSB vulnerabilities, as the sockets contain no data lines.
"It’s just power and ground," said BT spokesman Yusuf King.
Free web browsing will not be allowed on the London Link pillars.
When the service was introduced in New York in January, some people began using the embedded tablets to watch porn in public. LinkNYC put a stop to that last month when it shut down the web-browsing option on the pillars.
ISPs in the U.K., including BT, are required to block adult content by default, so using the tablet to watch porn ought not to be possible there.
Limiting the tablet to providing local information has other benefits, though, said King. "Another reason to remove the tablet web browser is to prevent people monopolising kiosks for long periods."
LinkUK, like LinkNYC, will be funded by advertising. Instead of the posters or wrap-around ad spots that Primesight will sell on 17,500 other BT phone booths around the U.K., the new pillars will each carry two 55-inch HD displays running non-stop commercials and public service announcements.
London's traditional red phone boxes won't disappear from London's streets with the introduction of the new pillars: Many of the 602 remaining in the London area are legally protected as historic architectural features. Instead, the pillars' brushed stainless steel and glass panels will replace a more recent generation of phone booths, made of the same materials.

A third of Europeans still haven’t returned their Galaxy Note 7

The Galaxy Note 7 mop-up continues – but a third of owners in Europe are still to return their potentially dangerous devices to Samsung.
Samsung has revealed it has replaced or refunded two thirds of its customers orders, and those who still own the phone in Europe are soon to receive a software update that limits the phone to 60% of its charge.
It’s hoped this will drive more owners into giving up their device, and ensure that those who are hanging on to their Note 7's are safer.

Just give it back

Australia and South Korea previously saw the update that limited phones to 60% of the full Note 7 battery capacity.
Some users have noticed that there's a way to get around this in the Settings, and allow their phones to charge to 80% – but don't do this.
It's not a sensible course of action, and if you still haven't returned your Galaxy Note 7 you should do so soon, while Samsung is still offering a full refund or an alternative Galaxy device.

Huawei Mate 9 release date, news and rumors

A flagship phablet which could have the best specs of the year

Update: Huawei has revealed an official teaser for the Mate 9, and it's sounding ever more impressive, with rumors of a 20MP/12MP dual-lens camera that will be able to do 4x optical zoom. But the top end model could cost an enormous amount of money.
Thought all of 2016’s flagships had arrived? Think again, because Huawei has a massive phone with similarly big specs in the works, and we’re expecting to see it soon.
The Huawei Mate 9 and Huawei Mate 9 Pro might not have the brand appeal of the iPhone 7 Plus or Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, but with talk of a 20MP dual-lens camera, a huge curved screen, 4x optical zoom and up to 6GB of RAM, among other impressive specs, they could be even higher end.
With the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 being killed the Mate 9 could also prove a strong alternative to that. Read on for all the news and rumors so far.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? A phablet flagship from Huawei
  • When is it out? A November 3 announcement is likely
  • What will it cost? Possibly upwards of $475 (£400, AU$625)

 Huawei Mate 9 release date

Hottest leaks:
  • November 3 announcement
Early rumors suggested the Huawei Mate 9 would land in December, but more recently there’s been talk from PhonAndroid of an early November launch, and Huawei has now even announced a press event on Thursday November 3 in Munich.
While the company hasn’t mentioned the Mate 9 by name, it has said it will use the event to launch a “new flagship device” according to Pocket Lint, so it’s almost certainly going to be the fabled phablet.
The image above, found by GizmoChina, is an official teaser for the event, and while it doesn't give much away the claim of 'a step ahead' certainly suggests Huawei is cooking up something impressive.
Of course you probably won’t be able to buy the Huawei Mate 9 on November 3, but hopefully the company won’t keep us waiting too long.
TechRadar’s take: With no other Huawei flagships on the immediate horizon November 3 seems all but guaranteed to be the announcement date.

 Huawei Mate 9 screen

Hottest leaks:
  • 5.9-inch screen in curved and flat varieties
  • 1080p and QHD resolutions
The Huawei Mate 9 is largely expected to have a 5.9-inch 1080 x 1920 screen, with a pixel density of 373 pixels per inch.
Ideally we’d like to see a sharper QHD resolution on a display of that size, but it should still be reasonably crisp.
However, there has been some talk of a QHD 1440 x 2560 resolution too, and@evleaks has posted leaked renders of the phone in both curved and flat screen varieties, leading to speculation that the curved version (likely called the Mate 9 Pro) could be QHD while the flat one is 1080p.
TechRadar’s take: The Huawei P9 only has a 1080p screen, so we wouldn’t count on a QHD one, but it would make sense for Huawei to up the resolution given that the Mate 9’s screen is larger, so there’s a fair chance that at least one version will be QHD.

 Huawei Mate 9 design

Hottest leaks:
  • A full metal body
  • Nine different color choices
The Huawei Mate 9 is rumored to have a metal body, a bit like the Huawei Mate 8 or Huawei P9. Leaks and renders suggest there’ll be strips along the top and bottom, possibly housing antenna bands, and that the phone will have a slightly curved rear.
It may also come in nine different colors according to PhonAndroid, including amber gold, amber gray, ceramic white, champagne gold, mocha gold, silver, pink gold, shiny black and sky gray.
The front of the phone has minimal bezels to either side of the screen in the leaked images we’ve seen, but larger ones above and below.
Oddly, images of the curved screen version show an oblong home button below the display, while the flat screen version seemingly has no button and just a Huawei logo.
TechRadar’s take: The Huawei Mate 9 is likely to have a full metal body, given that other recent Huawei flagships do, and the images we’ve seen seem believable.

Huawei Mate 9 camera and battery

Hottest leaks:
  • 20MP and 12MP rear cameras
  • 4x optical zoom
  • A big battery
According to MyDrivers, the Huawei Mate 9 has a Leica-branded dual-lens camera, just like the Huawei P9, but it looks like it might be getting a megapixel upgrade, with talk of a 20MP and 12MP sensor pairing, up from 12MP for both on the P9.
Though we should point out that as ever, more megapixels doesn’t necessarily mean higher quality.
It’s likely that the dual-lenses will serve the same purpose as on the P9, with one (probably 20MP) RGB sensor to pick out colors and one (likely 12MP) monochrome one for enhanced detail if you use both lenses, or for true black and white shots if you use just the monochrome sensor.

Huawei Mate 9 OS and power

Hottest leaks:
  • Up to 6GB of RAM
  • A 2.6GHz octa-core processor
  • Android Nougat
There should be no shortage of power here, as the Huawei Mate 9 is said to have a 2.6GHz octa-core Kirin 960 processor and come in at least two configurations – one with 4GB of RAM and one with 6GB.
While not confirmed, it’s likely that the 6GB version would come with a curved screen while the 4GB model has a flat screen.
Very few phones yet have 6GB of RAM, with most flagships still rocking 4GB, so both models should be high-end devices.
The Mate 9 is also rumored to come running Android Nougat, so its software could be as up to date as its specs. Though it’s sure to be overlaid with Huawei’s Emotion UI, which is one of the more intrusive Android interfaces and lacks an app drawer.
TechRadar’s take: 6GB of RAM could become the new standard soon, and a few phones already have that much, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see it from Huawei, while a high-end octa-core processor is very likely given that this is a flagship phone.

 Huawei Mate 9 other features

Hottest leaks:
  • Up to 256GB of storage
  • A fingerprint scanner
Like most flagship phones, the Huawei Mate 9 is said to have a fingerprint scanner.
It’s also rumored to come with 64GB or 128GB of storage coupled with 4GB of RAM, or with 256GB of storage and 6GB of RAM, according to @playfuldroid. Plus there’s said to be a microSD card slot.
TechRadar’s take: All of these features are believable, and in fact we’d almost be surprised if the Mate 9 didn’t have a fingerprint scanner.

 Huawei Mate 9 price

Hottest leaks:
  • Could start at roughly $475/£390/AU$625
  • Top end model might cost up to $1300 (around £1065/AU$1700)
A leaked promo image for the Huawei Mate 9, shared by @playfuldroid, gives us a hint at the price – though it’s in Chinese Yuan and a direct conversion isn’t likely to be entirely accurate.

Huawei Mate 9 OS and power

Hottest leaks:
  • Up to 6GB of RAM
  • A 2.6GHz octa-core processor
  • Android Nougat
There should be no shortage of power here, as the Huawei Mate 9 is said to have a 2.6GHz octa-core Kirin 960 processor and come in at least two configurations – one with 4GB of RAM and one with 6GB.
